Black Pearl Software and later THQ managed to acquire the rights to create a a multi-platform video game based on Katsuhiro Otomo's
Akira manga and anime film back in 1993. There were versions of the game in development for Super Nintendo, Game Gear and Sega Genesis. The Genesis version was on display during the Consumer Electronics Show in 1994. Footage from 1994's CES recenly surfaced on YouTube and shows the opening sequence and some of the gameplay, including portions of the game where players controlled Kaneda on his motorcycle.
According to Jim Gregory, who worked on the Super Nintendo version, the game was scrapped due to general project neglect. Issues with the project manager and staff leaving the project ultimately ended any chances the 16-git
Akira game had of making its way to gamers.
