Not familiar with Genesis of Aquarion? Here's a brief synopsis of the story line:
The mythological beings known as Shadow Angels (Datenshi), immortal winged beings with immense strength and technology, had mankind at their mercy twelve thousand years ago. That is, until Apollonius, one of their kind, fell in love with Seliane, a female human warrior. With the fabled huge war robot Aquarion (also known as Akuerion), Apollonius joins forces with humanity to free mankind from enslavement.
Earth's magnetic field shifted in a catastrophe known as the "Big Catastrophe," eleven years earlier to the novel, causing tremendous destruction to large portions of the earth and wiping off a large portion of its population. The Shadow Angels, who had been dozing off in their home city of Atlantia (also known as Atorandia) during their conflict with Apolonius, returned along with the catastrophe. The Shadow Angels started invading human cities to abduct people and use them as cattle—dubbed "the wingless ones"—to harvest prana (, purna, life force) from the prisoners. Their prana provides the mythical Tree of Life (, Seimei no Ki), as well as the Shadow Angels, with energy and nutrients. The Shadow Angels harvest with the aid of enormous floating harvesters known as harvest beasts (, shkakuj), which are protected by enormous robots known as Cherubim Soldiers (, Kerubimu Hei). Even though they are intelligent machines, Shadow Angels occasionally control them.
Conventional weaponry are useless against the Cherubim, and the remaining cities can only be partially protected by rings of projectors that use the Earth's strata to project a quantum shield that prevents Shadow Angels from entering or materializing there. Nevertheless, a human expedition commanded by Gen. Fudo unearths three extremely technologically advanced fighter jets, and DEAVA (Division of Earth Vitalization Advancement) takes over the study of these planes, known as Vectors (Bekut), in an effort to determine how to employ them. The three vectors are known as the green Vector Luna (Bekut Runa), the blue Vector Mars (Bekut Mzu), and the red Vector Sol (Bekut Soru), and are primarily painted in white. DEAVA learns the Vectors can only be operated by persons with specific abilities known as Elements (, Eremento), that the three Vectors are actually fragments of Aquarion, the robot that was used to battle the Shadow Angels twelve millennia earlier. They also learn that the Elements can eventually combine the Vectors into one of the huge robot's three fighting forms, which they may then employ to combat and vanquish the Cherubim.
The Elements encounter Apollo, a 13-year-old who appears to be the reincarnation of Apollonius, during their first attack against the Cherubim by combining the Vectors into a formation of Aquarion. They are persuaded of this when he assumes command of the Vector Sol by himself, merges the Vectors into the Solar Aquarion formation, and vanquishes the adversary, earning him DEAVA's recruitment to their ranks.
Aside from comments from producer Shoji Kawamori thanking the fans for their support and noting that the Genesis of Aquarion series has been continuing for 18 years thanks to the combined power of the cast and crew, no further details about the new series have yet been revealed.
