When Pacific Rim was released in 2013, Guillermo del Toro released an homage to anime, mecha, and kaiju, all in a single film. Starring Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, Undeclared), Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Blade), Idris Elba (Thor: Ragnarok, The Suicide Squad), and Charlie Day (It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, The Lego Movie), the flick made enough money to become del Toro's most commercially successful film.
Nearly a decade later, the movie has spawned a fleshed-out franchise. The film received a sequel in Pacific Rim: Uprising in 2018, which starred John Boyega (Attack the Block, Star Wars: Episode VII-IX) alongside a mix of new and returning supporting cast members. However, it was widely considered worse than Guillermo del Toro's initial film.
Luckily for fans of the kaiju and mecha franchise, there have been other mediums in which Pacific Rim has thrived. The best example is Pacific Rim: The Black, a Netflix Original anime series that is so popular a prequel graphic novel Pacific Rim: Blackout has just been released - check out the official press release below!
