We're all familiar with the fairy tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and other classic Grimms Brother stories. They've been told and depicted through countless adaptations, each offering their own slightly unique spin or approach.
Now comes The Grimm Variations, an all-new original anime series that reboots the Grimms' Fairy Tales through the unique perspective of Charlotte, the younger sister of brothers Jacob and Wilheim.
The "innocent and curious" Charlotte sees the stories quite differently from her brothers.
At AnimeJapan 2024, Netflix revealed an all-new trailer for The Grimm Variations, an anthology featuring six fairy tales "with a dark twist, exposing the shadowy side of human desire." The trailer confirmed the six fairy tale stories that will be reimagined: "Cinderella," "Little Red Riding Hood," "Hansel and Gretal," "The Elves and the Shoemaker," "The Town Musicians of Bremen," and "Pied Piper of Hamelin."
Once upon a time, brothers Jacob and Wilhelm collected fairy tales from across the land and made them into a book. They also had a much younger sister, the innocent and curious Charlotte, who they loved very much. One day, while the brothers were telling Charlotte a fairy tale like usual, they saw that she had a somewhat melancholy look on her face. She asked them, "Do you suppose they really lived happily ever after?
Netflix also confirmed that The Grimm Variations will debut on the streaming platform on April 17th.
The all-new anime was created in partnership between Netflix and manga creator group CLAMP (X, Card Captor Sakura), with the latter drafting the original character designs. Animation production on the series was done by WIT Studio.
The Grimms Variations was written by Michiko Yokote (Bleach, Gintama) with Akira Miyagawa (Space Battleship Yamato 2199) composing the music.
It's been a busy weekend for Netflix at AnimeJapan 2024. The Grimms Variations is just one of numerous anime projects set to arrive on Netflix in 2024.
The streamer also confirmed that My Hero Academia (Seasons 1-4), BlackClover (Seasons 1-4), One Piece Film: Red, and more will be hitting the service this year.
In a press release today, Netflix confirmed what many of us have known for a while now, that anime continues to be a popular genre on the streaming platform. The company confirmed that at least 100 million households are tuning in a year, "and this momentum shows no signs of slowing."
