Gintama has become one of the most beloved manga and anime franchises ever to be released, and a lot of it is due in part to its fearlessness in breaking the fourth wall and being aware of what it is and how it operates. Since Hideaki Sorachi released the book in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump in 2009, the seires released a total of 77 volumes before concluding last year and became a massive success in that time!
Following the release of the manga, it wasn't long before an anime was later greenlit, and now, with almost 400 episodes and two films released, the successful series is about to follow in the manga's footsteps and conclude with a bang! Gintama THE FINAL will be the final bow for the franchise as a whole, and while it won't be a complete retelling of the manga's conclusion, it will borrow some story beats.
However, Gintama isn't known for following typical storytelling conventions, and that is why while the film is technically the finale, it still is not quite the end. The Japanese streaming service dTV has a plan to release an anime special exactly one week after the release of the movie!
There is no word on what the special will show, but it is safe to assume it will definitely be unexpected. Will you be watching the film and its special? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments, and make sure to check out the official announcements below!
While working in a cinema, Gintoki comes upon a "movie thief" (a figure in Japanese culture often depicted as a man with a video camera as a head, stand in as someone who illegally film in cinemas). After scolding the movie thief for his actions, he finds himself warped into another world via the camera lens.
Gintama THE FINAL will release on January 8th in Japan, and the anime special will be streaming on January 15th, in Japan, on the dTV streaming service.
