YOUR NAME Tops China Box Office For Second Week In A Row

The unstoppable juggernaut that is Makoto Shinkai's your name. is showing no signs of slowing down. The coming of age anime film has taken the #1 spot in the second largest film market in the world for a second week in a row.

At this point, is anyone really surprised at how well your name. is performing at box offices around the world? It's already the runaway favorite for this year's Oscars and analysts are predicting a massive debut in the US. Already licensed by FUNimation, the anime distributor is likely waiting till after your name. sweeps every anime/animated category during Awards Season before releasing the film here in the US.

However, the film is already out in China and earned $15.3 million USD this past week, edging out Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge ($14.4 M USD) to take the top spot.  To date, the film has earned $71.2 million after 10 days of release in China.  Released in Japan this past August, the film has grossed $243 million worldwide and shows no signs of slowing down.  For added perspective, the cost to make classic Studio Ghibli films today (price adjusted for inflatino) averages out to about $17 million USD.



Mitsuha is a high school girl living in a rural mountainous town who yearns to live in Tokyo.  Taki is a high school boy whose home is in the capital. Mitsuha has a dream in which she is a boy living in Tokyo, while Taki has a dream in which he has become a girl in a town deep in the mountains. Mitsuha and Taki keep having these strange dreams and they come to realize that they have switched bodies.




Japanese rock band Radwimps provides the soundtrack.  Ryunosuke Kamiki voices Taki while Mone Kamishiraishi plays Mitsuha.
