Neon Genesis Evangelion has been one of the most important and influential anime series to be released in the past 30 years, and it could also be viewed as one of the most somber. While on the surface, the original franchise was a huge hit for fans of mecha, it could also be viewed as a prime example of how the demands of the genre can take a toll on creators like Hideaki Anno who, while working on the series, had bouts with depression as the series progressed.
A new animated film campaign called Rebuild of Evangelion that is led by Anno will tell an alternate reality version of the original series over the course of multiple films. Initially created as a trilogy, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the team to split the third film and release the fourth and final one at a later date.
Now, the final film in the series, Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time, will cap off this new franchise in a beautifully animated and epic fashion. The film has also released a brand new teaser ahead of its release next year!
With the new franchise coming to a close, it's hard to say what will be next for Evangelion, but with things seeming even more reinvigorated, the future looks bright! We would love to hear your thoughts on the new teaser in the comments below!
