Blade Runner: Black Lotus, announced all the way back in November 2018, is an upcoming Japanese CG animated series based on the movie franchise of the same name created by Ridley Scott back in 1982 and continued in 2017 with the acclaimed Blade Runner 2049.
It's a co-production involving both Crunchyroll and Adult Swim. Sola Digital Arts produces. All thirteen episodes of the series will be directed by Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama. The director of the Blade Runner Black Out 2022 anime short, Shinichirō Watanabe, serves as creative producer.
The series may well actually take place within the same continuity of the short. Blade Runner: Black Lotus is set in the year 2032, after the blackout. It's said that the series will feature "familiar" characters from the Blade Runner universe, though it is lead by a female replicant.
We may well now know who will be playing that female replicant. Jessica Henwick recently told The Hollywood Reporter (via Toonado) that during quarantine she "did a pretty big animated series, but I don’t think they’ve announced me yet. So I don’t know if I can say it, but I’m the lead in that and I’m excited for that to come out. It will be on Adult Swim in 2021, I believe."
Do you know what else is set to air on Adult Swim, as a part of the Toonami programming block, in 2021? Blade Runner: Black Lotus. Henwick later continues; "What can I say about this other new one? It’s based on a very big film that’s in the sci-fi world and was recently revisited. And they’re now venturing into the animated world. That is what I will say. (Laughs.) So I’m doing that and a couple of other voice gigs, but that’s the one that I’m really the most excited about."
