SSSS.GRIDMAN: The Hit Tokusatsu Anime Is Making Its Way To Toonami

Japan has always been known for its larger than life superheroes, either from the live-action Super Sentai and Kamen Rider franchises or the live-action (and occasionally animated) adventures of Ultraman. The Tokusatsu (special- effects) genre has been entertaining audiences for decades and if there is an otherworldly threat, no matter the series, there will always be colorfully armored superheroes with a penchant for vanquishing evil there to defeat them.

One hit series in the genre that was released in 2018 was SSSS.Gridman. The series was created by the same mind that brought Ultraman into the world and is set in a similar world to the original Denkō Chōjin Gridman. The new anime was created by Studio Trigger and Tsuburaya Productions and has since been hailed as one of the best series in the genre and the franchise ever!

However, while the show has been such a massive success in Japan, there has never been a strong footing to open in the west, unlike its predecessor Ultraman. However, it looks like the hit anime has finally found a home in western television with an announcement that the anime will be premiering on Toonami early next year. During a live stream with the staff of Adult Swim and Toonami, it was confirmed around the ten-minute mark that hte series would be making its way to the anime programming block.

The story focuses on Yūta Hibiki, an amnesiac first-year high school student living in the fictional Japanese city of Tsutsujidai. He meets the Hyper Agent Gridman in an old computer, who states that the boy has a mission he must fulfill; Yūta sets out to find the meaning to those words and his memory loss.

SSSS.Gridman is coming to Toonami in January 2021!
