Less than a month has passed since the release of Final Fantasy XVI, and there are already rumblings of a stage musical adaptation in the works!

Today, Square Enix said that it will work with Takarazuka Revue to create a stage performance adaptation of the new video game. There are currently very few deatils released regarding the collaboration and the progress of it so far. What we do know is the video game adaption will be written and directed by Naoko Koyanagi. Since 1999, Koyanagi has been a member of the Takarazuka Revue. Previous works include shinjikouen direction for Elisabeth and The Scarlet Pimpernel, as well as adaptations of Lupin III and Haikara-san: Here Comes Miss Modern.

Takarazuka Revue describes the announced Final Fantasy XVI performance as a "innovative musical work" which the meaning of that can go a number of different directions.. so we will have to wait and see for ourselves just what they mean when it opens on May 17, 2024 at Hyogo's Takarazuka Grand Theater.

Not familiar with the game? Here's a bit about FINAL FANTASY XVI:

FINAL FANTASY XVI introduces players to an all-new story in the FINAL FANTASY universe, an epic dark fantasy that takes place in the realm of Valisthea – a land blessed in the light of the Mothercrystals, and where peace falters as the spread of the Blight threatens to destroy their dominions.

The fate of the land is decided by the Eikons, mighty summoned beasts and their Dominants, men and women who have been blessed with the ability to call upon and wield them. This is the tale of Clive Rosfield, a warrior granted the title “First Shield of Rosaria” and sworn to protect his younger brother Joshua, the Dominant of the Phoenix, Eikon of Fire. Before long, Clive will be caught up in a great tragedy and swear revenge on the Dark Eikon known as Ifrit, a mysterious entity that brings calamity in its wake.
